Empty Road

Roger Martins
Empty Road is an architectural and landscape photography project, as well as a documentary, which shows the current state of the National-II road, one of the deadliest roads in Spain. It is a 490 miles road that connects France and Madrid passing through Barcelona and Zaragoza. Although today only 166 miles of the old national road remain, the rest were replaced by the A-2. With the creation of the North-East motorway and the recent opening of free tolls, the road has suffered an unprecedented decline. Abandoned inns, houses in ruins, agricultural businesses replaced by machines, this photobook aims to show the socio-economic reality of a once popular road, which is now inhabited by lorry drivers, ghost towns and few livestock farmers. The landscape ends up being a mirror of human abandonment and of the abandonment of the countryside.
